The pre-shot routine will allow you to visualise and feel the stroke you are aiming to play and finish with the excellent finish with the correct tempo and rhythm when you step up to the ball.   Do you stand on the driving range and hit incredible golf shots but on the course, you aren’t hitting the ball as well? This is down to you not overthinking on the driving range whereas on the course there is added pressure from other players and challenging shots which bring the ‘what if’s’ which can hinder any golfers mind set and not guarantee that desirable soaring score. How to improve your golf game: Mental tips and drills for improvement

Do you enjoy playing golf? Whether is it for a leisure or competitive purpose, the mental game set is a crucial aspect for any sport. Having a mentally tough skill game can separate you from the rest of the playing field and allow you to shoot under par more often as well as relieving the pressure. This blog will give ultimate tips for sinking more putts and pre-round mental game tips for golfers.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR PUTTING: IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL MIND SET

Putting is by far the most important aspect of golf, having the correct mind set and confidence can allow you to sink more putts and lower your score. Without the mental side of putting, you will miss putts as a result of lost focus. Here are 3 tips to improve your game set around the green and develop these skills into your routine.

1. Get yourself familiar with the pace of the greens

As a golfer myself I used to spend a lot of time working around the greens as having a strong short game can drastically improve your confidence and mindset, with a lot practicing at my home club I became familiar with the pace and layouts of the greens meaning I was able to lay the putts up close to the hole for an easy tap in.

When I would go to other clubs for tournaments and competitions, I wouldn't be so familiar with the pace of the greens as every putting surface is different on each course, this would lead to me not being able to lay the ball up as close as I would have liked and left myself with a longer second putt or three putting which would set my mind set off.

The major tip in order to improve your putting is to be able to adapt quickly to different putting surfaces and spending some time practicing longer and shorter putts before your round which will allow a greater feel of the pace on the green.

2. Visualise the putt and the stroke to the cup

The most successful putters are creative with their strong visual sense and feel of where they imagine their ball to roll around the green. For myself, I tend to stand behind the ball and read the breaks in the green and get a feel of the stroke I will use to roll the ball as close to the hole as possible. Having a well-developed pre-shot routine can strengthen your game and varies between different golfers as not all pre-shot routines work for everyone.

The main tip to visualise the putt is to take a minute and visualise where you want the ball to roll and judge the speed around the greens through pre-shot routines to allow a greater feel of the stroke.

3. Don't let three putting shift your mind set!

When you stand up and three putt it can be difficult to shift from your mind and can set you off. The most successful golfers still three putt it's about how you deal with it after. This is because of a lack of confidence when standing up to take the stroke. Not being able to trust the read of the green and the breaks can bring more pressure to your game.

When I would three putt sometimes it would set me off, but I find the best way to deal with this is to learn for the next hole and to put the previous hole behind me to allow myself to visually prepare for any challenges.

Having trust in yourself and a positive mindset is crucially important in making those daunting putts. If you stand up to hit the putt and sub-consciously think you will miss, I guarantee that you will, so it's important to think positively prior to hitting those long or short putts.
